Real-World E-Bike Range: Why You Won't Get the Claimed Miles
Updated 2026-09-25
"Up to 75 miles" sounds great. But range claims describe a best case: a light rider, flat ground, low assist, mild weather and no stops. Most riders get 40–70% of the claimed figure.
How range really works
A battery's capacity is measured in watt-hours (Wh). The number that matters is how many watt-hours the bike uses per mile:
Range (miles) ≈ usable battery Wh ÷ Wh used per mile
A typical e-bike uses somewhere between about 10 and 30 Wh per mile. A 700Wh battery could give you 60+ miles at the low end, or about 20 at the high end. Where you land depends on five things.
The five things that cut range
- Assist level and throttle use. The more the motor does, the faster the battery drains. Riding mostly on throttle can halve your range compared with low assist.
- Speed. Air resistance rises steeply with speed. Going from 20 to 28 mph can use roughly 40–50% more energy per mile.
- Weight. You, your cargo and the bike all count. A 230 lb rider with groceries uses noticeably more than a 150 lb rider with nothing.
- Hills. Climbing takes energy, and you only get a little back on the way down (more with regenerative braking).
- Cold. Lithium batteries deliver less capacity below about 40°F — often 20% less or more.
Fat tires, low tire pressure, headwinds and lots of stop-and-go starts all take a bite too.
How to choose a battery size
- Work out your longest regular ride (round trip).
- Add a 30% buffer for wind, detours and battery aging.
- Use the range estimator with your real weight, terrain and riding style, and pick a bike whose low estimate still covers that distance.
If you'll carry kids or cargo, or ride in winter, size up — or choose a bike that supports a second battery.
How we estimate range on EbikeSheet
Every bike on this site gets a "realistic range" figure from the same model, so bikes can be compared fairly even though brands test differently. It's an estimate, not a test result — but it's a lot closer to what most riders see than the number on the box.
