How Much Does an E-Bike Weigh? (And When It Matters)
Updated 2026-10-02
Most e-bikes weigh between 50 and 80 pounds, roughly two to three times a regular bike. The motor, battery, stronger frame and wider tires all add up. Among the bikes we list, the lightest is 37 lb and the heaviest is 88 lb.
Once you're pedaling with the motor helping, you mostly stop noticing the weight. Where you do notice it is every time you have to lift the bike.
Typical weights by type
These are the manufacturers' stated weights for bikes in our data:
| Type | Typical weight | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Lightweight commuter | 37–46 lb | Aventon Soltera 3 ADV (37 lb), Velotric T1 ST Plus (39 lb) |
| Cruiser / full-size commuter | 48–84 lb | Velotric Breeze 1 (48 lb), Aventon Level 4 REC (68.5 lb) |
| Folding | 63–73 lb | Velotric Fold 1 (63 lb), Lectric XP4 (69 lb) |
| Fat-tire / off-road | 54–78 lb | Aventon Ramblas ADV (54 lb), Aventon Aventure 3 (76 lb) |
| Cargo | 65–88 lb | Rad RadRunner (65 lb), Aventon Abound LR (88 lb) |
Brands don't all weigh bikes the same way. Some quote the weight with the battery, some without, and racks or fenders may or may not be included. We show both figures on a bike's page when the brand gives them.
What makes an e-bike heavy
- The battery. Usually 7–10 lb. Bigger batteries mean more range and more weight.
- The motor. Several pounds for a hub or mid-drive motor.
- Tires and wheels. Fat tires and their rims weigh much more than narrow commuter tires.
- The frame. Built stronger to handle the speed and load, and stronger still on cargo bikes rated for 400 lb or more.
- Extras. Suspension forks, racks, fenders, lights and kickstands.
When weight matters
- Stairs. Carrying a 70 lb bike up a flight of stairs every day gets old fast. If you live upstairs with no elevator, look at bikes under about 50 lb.
- Car racks. Many hitch racks are limited to 60 lb per bike or less, and lifting a heavy bike onto one is awkward. Check the rack's per-bike limit, and take the battery off first to save several pounds. Most roof and trunk racks aren't suitable for heavy e-bikes.
- Folding bikes. Folding makes a bike smaller, not lighter. The folders we list weigh 63–73 lb. See folding vs full-size e-bikes.
- A dead battery. Pedaling a heavy bike home with no assist is hard work, especially on hills.
- Smaller riders. A heavy bike is harder to steady at a stop and to push around a garage.
When it doesn't
- Riding with assist. The motor makes up for the extra pounds many times over.
- Range. Bike weight is a small part of the total next to the rider. Battery size, speed, hills and how much you pedal matter far more. Try the range estimator to see.
- Stability. Extra weight and wide tires can make a bike feel more planted, which is welcome on a cargo bike with kids aboard.
Tips for living with a heavy e-bike
- Remove the battery before lifting the bike. On the Rad RadWagon 5, for example, that takes the weight from 86 lb to 75.6 lb.
- Use walk mode. Many e-bikes have a low-speed walk assist that helps push the bike up a ramp or driveway.
- Get a rack with a ramp if you'll transport the bike by car.
- Store it at ground level where you can, with an outlet nearby for charging. See e-bike battery care.
Want a light one?
The lightweight e-bikes list ranks the lightest bikes we cover, and the compare page lets you sort every bike by weight. Lighter e-bikes usually get there with smaller batteries and narrower tires, so check the range and ride comfort are still enough for you.
